4 members of President Uhuru’s security team died in a road crash on Tuesday along the Isiolo-Marsabit highway, while one is in hospital with injuries.

The four were part of the elite GSU Recce Company that protects the President. According to reports, they were part of an advance team headed to Lonyangalani to carry out security surveillance and inspection ahead of Uhuru’s visit today to commission the wind power project.

The Toyota Landcruiser they were travelling in burst its right tyre, causing the vehicle to roll several times. They died on the spot.

Just last week, a vehicle in Uhuru’s motorcade hit a 70 year old man in Mumias.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has cancelled his tour to Narok County following the Saturday night accident that claimed the lives of at least 33 people along the busy Naivasha -Nakuru highway.

In a statement issued on Sunday afternoon, State House indicated that President Kenyatta had postponed the visit scheduled for Tuesday, 13 December 2016, so he can visit the families of the 11 General Service Unit (GSU) officers who perished in the accident.

“The President’s visit to Narok scheduled for Tuesday, 13 December 2016, has been postponed so he can visit with the families of the 11 officers from the VIP protection team of the General Service Unit (GSU) killed in a tragic road accident on the Naivasha-Nakuru Road last night,” State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu stated.

Mr Esipisu earlier on confirmed that the 11 GSU officers provide VIP protection, including to His Excellency the President.

The officers from the ‘G’ Company were travelling in a Toyota Land Cruiser registration number GK B 961G back to Nairobi after the presidential coverage in Bomet.

Meanwhile, President Kenyatta expressed his condolences to the families of all those affected by the Saturday evening accident that occured after a Uganda-bound lorry ferrying inflammable material lost control, rammed into other vehicles and exploded.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta wishes to express his condolences to the families of all the bereaved, including the young families of the gallant officers from the GSU. He also wishes all the injured quick recovery,” a statement issued by State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu read in part.

The Head of State termed the accident “unnecessary” directing all agencies involved to expeditiously investigate the incident.

“The President notes that the tanker responsible for the deaths should not have been on that particular road at that hour, and he expects the agencies responsible for enforcing traffic regulation to fully investigate this tragic breach,” the statement read.
